How to identify gambling issues

Gambling harm is often hidden and can be difficult to identify if not disclosed

Signs of gambling harm include:

  • Appearing withdrawn, restless, with reduced self-care or low mood
  • Trouble filling prescriptions or noticeable purchasing changes
  • Lacking time, focus or motivation to manage physical and mental health conditions
  • Reduced capacity to care for dependents
  • Financial hardship inconsistent with their circumstances
  • Distress or anxiety during pharmacy visits
  • Social isolation or withdrawing from usual supports
  • Taking medicines linked to gambling harm (e.g. dopamine agonists, levodopa-based medicines, Aripiprazole and Pramipexole)

The Lie-Bet questionnaire is a validated screening tool that can help pharmacists detect harmful gambling. It consists of two questions:

  1. Have you ever felt the need to bet more and more money?
  2. Have you ever had to lie to people important to you about how much you gambled?

If the individual answers yes to either question, asking them open questions to explore the issue further and seek help from a gambling support service is recommended.
